As the respiratory system undergoes various anatomical, physiological and immunological changes with age, elderly population become more vulnerable to pulmonary diseases. Physiologic senile emphysematous change partly explains the increased prevalence of obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the elderly, and decreased respiratory muscle strength with age can hinder effective cough, which is essential for airway clearance. Pulmonary rehabilitation is an evidence-based, comprehensive intervention that can be integrated into the management of individuals with lung diseases. It aims to reduce symptoms, optimize function, increase participation in daily life, and reduce health-care resource utilization. In this review, we summarize the components of pulmonary rehabilitation in two most frequently encountered pulmonary diseases in the elderly: COPD and pneumonia.
